Dominant natives in Australia, marsupials are “pouch” animals. Marsupials, similar to placental mammals, have short gestation periods giving live birth to young that climb from the birth canal to the “pouch,” attach themselves to the mother's nipples, and then feed and develop for weeks to months depending upon the species. Although marsupial species are not numerous, they may be very diverse structurally from the four footed (North American possum) to the two footed (kangaroo.)
