The difference between doves and pigeons is determined mostly by size. Pigeons are larger and stockier with rounded tails, with the dove being sleeker and smaller with pointed tails. This is not consistently applied with the common names for these birds including variations between “dove” and “pigeon.” The common urban pigeon found in many cities is also known as a "Rock Dove."
